Welcome to the Derwent Mountaineering Club (DMC). We are a club based in Matlock, Derbyshire with a wide range of outdoor interests including climbing, mountaineering, scrambling and walking. We have a diverse membership from around the Matlock area including Belper, Ashbourne, Chesterfield and Derby. We have a range of experience from novice climbers, north face summiteers, alpinists and some just out for a walk and a range of ages from 20's to 70's and everything in between.

Our aim is simply to enjoy the outdoors, so why not join us and enjoy it too in a friendly and supportive club based on the edge of the Peak District in the Matlock area? We have a full programme of organised meets - weekends to North Wales and the Lake District, local day and evening meets, social events and trips further afield to the Alps and Scotland - and we regularly meet each other in between to climb or walk etc.

Find out more about our activities by following the links above. The activities section gives more details of these with examples of our recent exploits. Read our history in the magazine - Scramble - and have a look at our photo gallery.

If you would like to join the club, or just come and check us out you will find a membership form under the "Join DMC" link and some instructions as to how to do this.

The following events are coming up in February. Members make sure you book your place where required. If you are interested in attending one of the DMC events and are not a member, please contact the secretary Mike Dowsett for details on how you could try out one of our meets with a view to becoming a member. Also see the Diary page for a longer range list.

Wed 5th - the Wirksworth Wall - meet at 7pm inside the wall and team up in 2's and 3's with those already there. Climbing at all grades, leading or top rope. If you haven't been before, or don't know anybody then send an email (Mike Dowsett)
to arrange to be met at reception. Link to the climbing wall

Weekend 7th, 8th, 9th - North Wales meet at Tal-y-Braich nr Deiniolen. A good location to access the heart of the mountaineering and climbing scenes in North wales. Situated on the slopes of Elider Fawr and overlooking Anglesey with great sunsets out of the hut window apparently. More details of the hut can be found here

Wed 12th - Member's slide show. An entertaining evening at the Temple hotel in Matlock Bath where members will share their experiences from last year with short slide shows. All are welcome - meet at 7:30 for 8pm start.

Sunday 16th. Spring has arrived for the first outing of the year on real rock at Froggat Edge. So dust off your Eastern Grit books and limber up.

Wed evening 19th - Last of this year's night navigation events which will take place around the Pack Horse Inn, Crowdicote. Organised by Ellen and Bill.

Wed evening 26th - And finally for March - the dreaded Fight Night - this year at Birchens Edge - for a bout of night climbing with head torches.

February saw the club going to Scotland where the weather was pretty poor most of the time but this photo taken by Mike Dowsett shows how it is often worth the effort to experience such beauty as this.

Well done Mike - this might just win Photo of the Year.

Have a look at the gallery for more photos from this and other events.
